Payment System

When people purchase goods or services or transfer funds to others, they need to use payment instruments, such as cash, checks, debit cards, credit cards or electronic money. Except for cash, payment instruments involve claims on financial institutions. Therefore, financial institutions need arrangements to transfer funds on behalf of themselves or their customers. A payment system is such a mechanism; it uses currency issued by the central bank as a unit of account and provides funds transfer services to individuals. The operation of a payment system includes delivering payment instruments, transmitting payment instructions and transferring funds through bank accounts to discharge the obligations between payees and payers. The BIS defines a payment system as a set of instruments, procedures and rules for the transfer of funds among system participants.[1]
