The Issuance of the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Series Coin Set–Sediq
The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will issue the 14th coin set of the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Series–Sediq on November 16, 2011. A total of 55,000 sets will be issued. The Central Bank has appointed the Bank of Taiwan to deal with the sale of the coin sets, limited to one coin set per purchaser at a time. This set consists of a NT$20 proof coin in circulation as well as a commemorative proof medal bearing traditional Sediq motifs. Each set costs NT$250.
The Sediq was at one time classified as part of the Tayal. The two tribes share similar culture traits but are linguistically different. The Sediq have been living in one of the mountains around the Central Range called Baishih since the 17th century. Part of the tribe migrated eastward around 300 years ago. Some migrants in Hualien and Yilan Counties were recognized by the government in 2004 as the tribe “Truku”, while the rest and those who stayed in Nantou County were recognized in 2008 as “Sediq”.
We are grateful to the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan, for examining the symbols and literature used in the preparation for the issuance of this coin set.
