The Commemorative Coin Set for the Chinese
Zodiac Year of the Rat
The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will issue the commemorative coin set for 2008, the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Rat on the 16th of January 2008. Each set consists of one silver coin weighing an ounce as well as two proof coins in different denominations. The silver coin has a face value of NT$100, the two proof coins,NT$50 and NT$20, respectively. Each proof coin set costs NT$1350.
The obverse face of the silver coin shows an image of a rat mother and child eating peanuts together as its subject, symbolizing: "The greater number of offspring a family has, the greater the wealth and blessing it will enjoy." The reverse side features an image of the "Hsinchu Eastern Gate," the last remaining Ch'ing Dynasty city gate of the historical Danshuei Municipality in the Taiwan-Fujian area.
The Bank of Taiwan is appointed as the delegate of the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to deal with the sale of 120,000 sets of coins. Each person may purchase only one set of coins at a time.
