Central Bank of China
PRESS RELEASE Release Date: January 9, 2006

The Commemorative Coin Set for the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dog

The Central Bank of China will issue the commemorative coin set for 2006, the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dog on the 12th of January 2006. Each set consists of one silver coin weighing an ounce as well as two proof coins in different denominations. The former has a face value of NT$100, the other two NT$50 and NT$20, respectively. Each proof coin set costs NT$1250.

The obverse face of the coin shows the indigenous Taiwan Dog, a smart, fierce, and cunning, medium-sized dog as its subject. Furthermore, in Chinese folklore, there’s a saying that holds dogs will bring fortune. The reverse side features the image of Taipei’s Meng Jia Long Shan Temple, which exhibits the classical Chinese architecture of a palatial style, three gates leading into three successive yards surrounded by four roofed structures. This ancient temple is a notable scenic spot in northern Taiwan. It was listed as a Grade 1 national historical site in 1985.

The Bank of Taiwan and the Central Trust of China are appointed as the delegates of the Central Bank of China to deal with the sale of 114,000 and 6,000 sets of proof coins, respectively. Each person may purchase one set at a time.
