The Issuance of the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Series Coin Set – Hla’alua
The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will issue the 15th coin set of the Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Series, Hla’alua, on November 12, 2026. A total of 13,000 sets will be offered for sale through the Bank of Taiwan. Purchases will be limited to two sets per person per transaction, at a price of NT$350 per set.
This coin set introduces the culture, customs, and traditions of the Hla’alua, officially recognized by the Executive Yuan as Taiwan’s 15th Indigenous People. The set consists of a NT$20 proof coin in circulation as well as a commemorative proof medal bearing traditional Hla’alua motifs. The obverse of the medal features a colored image showcasing the beauty of traditional Hla’alua attire, while the reverse depicts the Takiiarʉ (sacred shell) and the Laonong River Valley, an important area of Hla’alua settlement.
The outer sleeve portrays an Elder leading tribal members in the transmission of their culture, as well as the ritual of “Tossing the Sacred Shells and Seizing Blessings” during Miatungusu (the Sacred Shell Ritual), a traditional ritual of the Hla’alua. The inner pages introduce Miatungusu along with distinctive aspects of their culture, including traditional attire, the traditional Hla’alua house (Salia), the men’s meeting house (Tapuhlaihlia), crafts and tools sourced from nature, and economic activities. The set is both educational and collectible, and members of the public are welcome to purchase it.
We are grateful to the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan, as well as relevant experts and scholars, for examining the symbols and literature used in the preparation for the issuance of this coin set.
