Overview of Dishonored Checks Due to Insufficient Funds (May 2026)

I. Check Clearing Volume and Value

In May, the number of checks cleared totaled 3.14 million, representing a month-on-month decrease of 18.94%. The total value of checks cleared amounted to NT$0.92 trillion, a month-on-month decrease of 8.17%.

These developments primarily reflected a decrease of 1 month-end peak day1 compared with the previous month, leading to a decrease in both the volume and value of checks cleared (see attached table).

II. Dishonored Checks Due to Insufficient Funds

In May, the gross number of dishonored checks due to insufficient funds totaled 2,401, accounting for 0.08% of the total number of checks cleared, the same as in the previous month.

The gross value of such dishonored checks amounted to NT$2.2 billion, accounting for 0.24% of the total value of checks cleared. This represented a decrease of 0.03 percentage points from the previous month.

These developments primarily reflected the rate of change in dishonored check values exceeded that of total clearing values.

III. Analysis by Account Type

In May, the share of dishonored checks attributed to corporate accounts in terms of volume decreased by 0.30 percentage points from the previous month. The share of the value of dishonored checks attributed to corporate accounts decreased by 9.41 percentage points month on month. The shares for personal accounts moved in the opposite direction by a similar magnitude.
