PRESS RELEASE                                        Release Date: June 15, 2023

Taiwan's International Investment Position (2022)

A country's international investment position is the balance sheet of the stock of residents' financial assets from and liabilities to the rest of the world.

At the end of 2022, Taiwan's total external assets decreased by US$16.26 billion or 0.6% to US$2,706.80 billion compared to the end of 2021. This was mainly attributable to price declines in foreign securities held by residents.

Taiwan's total external liabilities was US$990.77 billion at the end of 2022, decreasing by US$317.47 billion or 24.3% from the end of the previous year. This was mainly accounted for by decreasing prices of local shares held by foreign investors.

As of the end of 2022, Taiwan's international investment continued to record a net asset position of US$1,716.03 billion, increasing by US$301.21 billion or 21.3% over the end of the previous year. Taiwan currently ranks as the 5th largest net creditor in the world.

Notes: 1. The next international investment position data will be released at 16:20 on June 14, 2024.
