Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

PRESS RELEASE                                        Release Date: June 15, 2021

Taiwan's International Investment Position (2020)

A country's international investment position is the balance sheet of the stock of residents' financial assets from and liabilities to the rest of the world.

At the end of 2020, Taiwan's total external assets grew by US$236.15 billion, or 10.5%, to US$2,492.06 billion compared to the end of 2019. This was mainly attributable to an increase in foreign debt securities investment by domestic insurance companies.

Taiwan's total external liabilities stood at US$1,120.64 billion at the end of 2020, increasing by US$212.90 billion or 23.5% from the end of the previous year. This was mainly accounted for by the rise in the prices of local shares held by foreign investors.

As of the end of 2020, Taiwan's international investment continued to record a net asset position of US$1,371.42 billion, increasing by US$23.25 billion or 1.7% over the end of the previous year. Taiwan currently ranks as the 5th largest net creditor in the world.

Notes: 1. The next international investment position data will be released at 16:20 on June 15, 2022.
