Central Bank of the Republic of China(Taiwan)

PRESS RELEASE                                        Release Date: June 15, 2020

Taiwan's International Investment Position (2019)

A country's international investment position is the balance sheet of the stock of residents' financial assets and liabilities to the rest of the world.

At the end of 2019, Taiwan's total external assets grew by US$202.66 billion, or 9.9%, to US$2,252.80 billion, compared to the end of 2018. This was mainly attributable to an increase in foreign debt securities investment by onshore funds and domestic insurers.

Taiwan's total external liabilities at the end of 2019 stood at US$910.02 billion, increasing by US$151.45 billion or 20.0% from the end of the previous year. This was mainly accounted for by an increase in foreign investors' holdings of local stocks and rising share prices.

As of the end of 2019, Taiwan's international investment continued to record a net asset position of US$1,342.78 billion, increasing by US$51.21 billion or 4.0% over the end of the previous year. Taiwan currently ranks as the 5th largest net creditor in the world.
